Love is not defined by culture. Love is defined by the character of God. His love directs us how to live.

God is love. v8

No attribute of God is more well known, or more misunderstood.

The love of God is an attribute of who he is. The love of God is selfless, faithful, and unconditional.

The love of the world is emotional, behavioral, and conditional.

God’s love is holy, relational, and eternal.

God’s love was revealed among us. v9

The motivation is not that we loved God, but that he loved us. The love of God is not in response to the love of people. Instead is it proactive toward God’s creation.

The demonstration of the love of God is that he sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. . .He sent his son to be the atoning sacrifice (propitiation) for our sins.

We are to be as God is, in this world. v17

v11 Dear friends- these are tender words of instruction

If God loved us in this way- this much, so intensely

We must also love one another- Love is not optional, it is an obligation.

The world loves those who love them. We are to love as God has loved us.

We have the love of God, and we must live out the love of God.

v17 As he is, so are we in this world- pure, holy, and loving.

This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us.

We have been born of God; we have the Spirit of God; we love as he loved; we can live without fear; we will have confidence on the Day of judgment

v20 If anyone says, “I love God” and yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
