Scripture Focus- Romans 15:1-7
Hope is Powerful- Biblical hope is confident expectation in God and his promises. Faith, hope, and love are the enduring virtues of our faith.
How can we hope together in God?
Hope comes through perseverance.
Endurance= accepting what we cannot change or have no control over, and pressing on as a disciple.
Isaiah 46:4; James 5:10-11
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
Hope comes through encouragement.
The word used for encouragement here, is virtually the same word Jesus used to describe the Holy Spirit of God.
John 16:7 It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. Parakletos= an advocate who consoles, comforts, encourages.
Encouragement comes from the Scriptures- What was written in the past was written for our instruction.
There are hundreds of examples in Scripture of God’s faithfulness
Joseph: Psalm 105:1, 16-22
God works through the Holy Spirit and the Word- these are gifts v5
Hope comes through harmony.
Harmony/unity- are dealt with extensively in Scripture
Unity is not uniformity, nor is it always unanimity. Harmony relates our affections and posture in life.
German Lutheran Theologian- 17th Century- Rupertus Meldenius- during the 30 years war- “In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.”
V6 So that you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with one mind and one voice.
