Contend For The Faith

The focus is a warning about apostasy. Apostasy is an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey, or recognize religious faith that was once believed. Apostasy is to turn away from or abandon what is true.

The danger is highlighted in verse 4. Examples are given of how not to live including: v5 Israel/Egypt; v6 Angels who rebelled; v7 Sodom and Gomorrah; v11 the Devil himself; v11 Cain, Balaam, Korah; v16;

The major problem is according to v19, they are unbelievers, not having the Spirit.

Consequences of Apostasy-  Designated for judgment; destruction for those who did not believe; headed for judgment on the great day; the punishment of eternal fire; they destroy themselves; for them the blackness of darkness is reserved for them.

Followers of Jesus are called to v3 Contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all.

Build yourself up in the faith. V20

The foundation= v3 the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all. We have a foundation, and are building the structure of our lives on it.

You can build your life on feelings, reason, tradition, culture but all will fail you ultimately.

Christ the Cornerstone- Eph 2:20-22  Pray in the Holy Spirit- Eph 6:18

Keep yourself in the love of God. V21

 Stay- pursue-obey       

If you move away from the foundation, and don’t build on the Word, the Spirit, prayer and faith, you are in great spiritual danger.

Abide- John 15:9-11 This is a close relationship not superficial acquaintance.

Expect the mercy of Jesus. V21b

Mercy is compassion and we are to look for it with expectation.

Eternity is in view, which helps us to keep the now in perspective.

Have mercy on those who waver/doubt; save others from the fire; have mercy on those who fear; hate what is defiled.
