To compromise is to make concessions or accommodations to standards which are held.
Pergamum was located 100 miles to the north of Ephesus and was the capitol of Asia. The city was a place of learning, culture, and great darkness.
Evil is present, do not compromise.
Pergamum was a center of false worship. There were temples to Athena, Dionysus, Zeus, and Asklepios.
Jesus holds the sharp, double-edged sword. Hebrews 4:12
The primary attack has always been on the Word- Criticism, Relativism, Pluralism, Humanism, Secularism
There was deep darkness yet they did not deny, deviate, or despair.
False teaching is common, do not compromise.
Balaam and the Nicolaitans are given as examples of idolatry and immorality.
A person should not claim to be joined with Jesus but live like the world.
2 Corinthians 6:14-17
Corruption tolerated within will destroy.
Signs of a compromising church-
Culture shapes the church.
Opposition softens the Word.
The mainstream overrides the main thing.
C.H. Spurgeon- I believe that one reason why the church of God has so little influence over the world is because the world has so much influence over the church.
Repentance is needed, do not compromise.
Repentance is a change of mind which leads to a change of behavior.
Look at sin and see how ugly it is.
The purity of the bride of Christ is at stake. Ephesians 5
Compromise by some brings consequences for all.
Even the most godly people can be prone to compromise and need to repent.
v17 Anyone who has an ear should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. I will give the victor some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name is inscribed that no one knows except the one who receives it.
Devote yourself to the Word.
Depend on the Spirit.
Determine to live for God.
