As Long As The Earth Endures

We have been in the throes of winter where I live. Many of my social media memories that have shown up recently are of previous years with similar challenges from the cold, ice, and snow. I did not grow up in a four-season climate but have lived in one for over twenty-five years. I enjoy various aspects of all four seasons, and snow is beautiful and peaceful.

One of the things the predictable seasons remind me of is the faithfulness of God. After the global flood, God made a covenant with Moses. God said in part, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease” (Genesis 8:22).

God created all there is and set forth the patterns for how his world would function. The seasons will continue. Day will come after night. Spring will follow winter, summer will follow spring, fall will follow summer, and winter will follow fall. This is predictably dependable.

The promise is limited to “as long as the earth endures.” God does not promise the planet in the form it is now in, will last forever. At some point in the future known only to God, he will remake the heavens and the earth.

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare, as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.

We should rest in and celebrate the faithfulness of God! Praise God for his faithfulness. Praise God for his dependability. Anchor your life in him!
