I have always loved Vacation Bible School. I loved it as a child and I love it as a pastor. VBS is a great tool for discipling children. Study after study has shown that the majority of people come to faith in Jesus Christ at a younger age in life.
I was in a lecture hall seminary class with close to 100 students many years ago. The question was asked, “How many of you came to faith in Vacation Bible School?” More than 80% of those being trained for ministry in that particular class had come to faith as a result of VBS. This is an anecdotal story of course, but it reflects the value of training children in the truth.
VBS is an effective tool for evangelism. When the Gospel of Jesus Christ is clearly taught, the Holy Spirit works to draw people to the Lord.
VBS is helpful for spiritual growth. Young people have an opportunity to have the Word of God taught to them and many of the things they learn will remain with them for life.
VBS brings people together. I remember many of the names and faces of people who served in VBS when I was growing up. Whether they were preparing and serving the snacks, teaching my class, or leading in games and songs, I remember the love and warmth they expressed to us. It also takes a lot of people to make VBS happen. It is a great way to utilize the church family and gives them space to exercise their God-given gifts. Relationships grow in the church as we serve together and serve the community.
VBS is fun and it meets children at their level, making the experience memorable. A high energy VBS is something children remember and then look forward to and enjoy year after year.
VBS is a helpful entry point to the church for families. When a church provides a safe, inviting environment for people to bring their children, it opens doors for ongoing relationships and a connection with the church.
VBS is a lot of work! I am always deeply grateful for the months of work our team puts in leading up to VBS to make is successful. It doesn’t just happen. It requires prayer, planning and a lot of love and endurance to see it through.
