One Day At A Time

I often tell people who are experiencing difficulties, “just take it one day at a time.” The Bible warrants this admonition. Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount instructs us not to worry, but to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

Jesus said, “Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

No truer words have ever been spoken. Each day has its own unique blessings and challenges. When we worry about tomorrow, we run the risk of missing out on the blessings of today. When we worry about tomorrow, we drain ourselves of much needed strength to deal with the challenges of today.

Taking life one day at a time helps one maintain a healthy perspective. Significant problems will not be minimized. Insignificant problems will not be maximized.

Taking life one day at a time builds faith. Jesus taught his disciples to ask God for daily bread. God provided daily bread in the wilderness for his people. Daily dependence on God develops, and builds our faith.

Taking life one day at a time helps life to be experienced as a journey and not a destination. “What if” questions can dominate our thinking. When anxiety takes hold, and we are fearful of the future, it is very difficult to be faithful in the present. This world is not our home. We will ultimately arrive at our final destination to be at home with God in heaven. When we do, days won’t matter because we will be freed from the tyranny of sin and the confusion it brings.

What are you currently dealing with? Ask God to help you. Just take it one day at a time!
