Keep Your Eyes On The Lord

I have been studying Psalm 16. Verse 8 has especially stood out to me. One translation is, “I always let the Lord guide me.” Another translation is, “I keep my eyes always on the Lord.” Peter quoted from the verse in his sermon at Pentecost in Acts 2:25, “I saw the Lord ever before me.”

The idea is that the Lord should always be our focus. I don’t know about you, but at times I am easily distracted. I can lose focus and look in any number of directions. The second part of verse 8 indicates when our eyes are on the Lord we will not be shaken. When I think about it, the times I am shaken in life and lose confidence, are when my focus is not as strongly on the Lord as it needs to be. We need to pray and ask the Lord to help us maintain a clear focus on him and rest in the unshakable strength he blesses our lives with.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
